DESCRIPTION AND MECHANISM OF ACTION: ALIN® is an immediate-acting glucocorticoid, composed of dexamethasone. Effective levels of dexamethasone are immediate, a useful feature when urgent therapeutic action is required.

ALIN®, a synthetic steroid, unlike natural corticosteroids, maintains a lower sodium retention capacity with a pharmacological effect (anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic) 29 times greater than cortisol, its mechanism of action in the anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anaphylactic response is improving the production of lipocortin, a protein that inhibits the enzyme phospholipase A2 responsible for the transformation of fatty acids into arachidonic acid (AA) through destroyed cell membranes.

AA acts as a substrate for two enzyme systems: cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase.

1. Prostaglandins are derived from cyclooxygenase and are mediators of the inflammatory response.

2. The leukotriene group is generated from lipoxygenase, a powerful chemotactic group that stimulates the migration of leukocytes to exudates and is also involved in allergic diseases and immune and non-immune inflammation.

DOSE: Single in mg per day.

Feline: 1.0 mg every 24 hours (2 tablets).

Canines: 0.5 mg every 24 hours (1 tablet).

Protocol for the oral administration of dexamethasone to terminate pregnancy in bitches, beginning between 30 and 35 days of gestation, with a proposed single dose administered twice daily for 10 days.

• Regimen: Dexamethasone tablets, twice a day, in the morning and in the evening.

• Dosage: 0.2 mg/kg of weight (one tablet for every 2.5 kilos of weight) twice a day, orally for 10 days.

• Expected resorption or abortion: 7 to 13 days after starting treatment.

• Expected side effects: Polyuria and polydipsia as symptoms of hyperadrenalism during treatment.

• Recommendations: Visit the veterinarian to confirm the effectiveness 4 to 8 days after finishing the treatment.

• Warnings: Use that requires consent and release of responsibilities by the owner.

WARNINGS: Do not administer in the presence of virus and fungal infections.

When administered at the same time with some immunogen, it is possible not to obtain an immune response.

Overdosage and prolonged use of this product can cause hormonal problems, such as iatrogenic Cushing's syndrome, polyuria and polydipsia, as well as dysfunction of the adrenal gland causing sodium and fluid retention, loss of potassium K+ and weight gain.

Do not administer to pregnant females in which normal delivery is desired.

Do not use in animals with chronic nephritis and hypercorticoadrenalism (Cushing's syndrome), congestive heart failure, diabetes and osteoporosis.

The few failures to terminate pregnancy included the birth of live normal and term puppies, the birth of dead puppies at term, partial resorptions, in which the bitches reabsorbed or eliminated the contents of any of the 5 or 6 vesicles diagnosed by palpation or ultrasound and then gave birth to one or two dead cubs at term.

Some studies show that dosing to stop labor can cause adrenal suppression during the treatment period; however, this suppression is transient, with serum cortisol concentrations returning to normal levels about a week after treatment completion.

Do not use in cats for the interruption of parturition.

In case of bacterial infections, ALIN® should be administered together with the appropriate antibiotic for the present infection. Store and handle the product out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature to no more than 30°C and in a dry place.
